Evaluation of Groundwater Resources in Minor Plio-Pleistocene Arenaceous Aquifers in Central Italy

The hilly landscape of the Periadric area in Central Italy is characterized by mainly marly–clayey foredeep basin deposits (Plio–Pleistocene age). These lithotypes are generally considered aquicludes, if compared with regional limestone aquifers Apennines. However, a coarsening upward trend characterizes upper portion this stratigraphic sequence, arenaceous and even conglomerates on top. From geomorphological viewpoint, areas coarser outcrops show flat shape sub-vertical slopes, like boundaries. At base these scarps, springs can be found at interface between coarse fine deposits, whereas bodies actual aquifers. Until now, hydrodynamics hydrochemical features kind aquifer have not been investigated deeply, because they always worthy water resource. could play crucial role integrated management, especially to cope climate changes drought periods. Considering these, main purpose study was investigate from hydrogeological point view assess groundwater quantity quality. Five examples throughout Abruzzo region were considered. For evaluation comparisons resources, volume that infiltrates yearly each squared kilometer an (Mm3/y/km2) applied. This value calculated through three different approaches provide recharge estimation for as exhaustive representative possible. results allowed us characterize model quantify resources 0.1 0.16 Mm3/y/km2, suitable multi–purpose utilization.
